A Song For Mama - Mother's Day 2013 Round Up

Some of my most vivid memories with my mom are of the two of us singing along to songs by some fantastic artists like Marvin Gaye and Tammi TerrellVan Morrison, and (my obsession for quite a while) Boyz II Men. With Mother's Day fast approaching, I knew I needed to put my expertise to work and illustrate one of our songs for her. The perfect fit and one with a ton of imagery is Boyz II Men's - A Song for Mama. The lyric that strikes me most is "Mama you're the queen of my heart." SO, I gathered my tools and got to work :

I know lots of people out there are into trying their hands at some DIY projects lately. So, I will tell you how it's done.

Here's what you'll need to have on hand :

1 pencil

1 sheet of tracing paper

1 bone folder (or spoon)

1 rubber stamp (or if you are thrifty you can try using foam)

1 carving tool (could be like the speedball pictured)

1 Ink roller

Ink of some sort (paint, speedball ink, stamp pad etc)

Surface you'd like to print on (paper, wood panel - as pictured, clothing - making sure you have the right ink, etc. etc.)

1 great idea that makes you think of your mommy

 

Here are simple instructions to follow :

Step 1 : Draw your image on tracing paper

Step 2 : Rub image onto stamp surface with bone folder or spoon

Step 3 : Carve out image or negative space around your lines, depending on the look you want.

Step 4 : Ink your stamp

Step 5 : Place surface on top of stamp and rub impression with spoon

Step 6 : Remove paper (or wood panel or cloth) from atop stamp

Step 7 : Be proud of yourself and enjoy your lovely new talent!

Step 8 : Gift wrap all pretty for you Mom.
